Tom Boyd
Tom W. Boyd is the David Ross Boyd Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Oklahoma. After teaching philosophy of religion and ethics there for 28 years, he retired from fulltime teaching in 1997. He also retired from the ordained ministry in the Presbyterian Church USA in the summer of 1998.
Tom’s wife Barbara, after pastoring a church in Colorado for five years, accepted a position as Director of Outreach for Religious Studies at the University of Oklahoma in 2002. Tom joined her and teaches for Religious Studies as part of the university’s Emeritus Professor Program. He teaches two courses per semester. Tom and Barbara also continue to work together, taking students abroad annually, as well as conducting seminars, workshops, and retreats.
Tom holds four earned degrees, including a Ph.D. in Religion from Vanderbilt University in 1973. His academic specialization is in philosophical theology, theories of religion, religion and culture, and ethics. His current concentration is on the relation among world religions and the relation between religion and culture. He is particularly devoted to issues related to interfaith dialogue. He also studies the impact of religion on ethics. He seeks through his studies and teaching to understand and appreciate religion in its contemporary setting and in light of an emerging planetary culture.
Tom and Barbara have four children, ranging in age from 49 to 34. They now enjoy seven grandchildren. As a couple they thrive on backpacking, canoeing, mountain biking, reading novels, and late night conversations. Tom exercises his imagination and plays, especially when working.
